You are currently looking to start a blog, but you don’t know what niche would be good to bring in some traffic, and probably make some sales. I understand you because I went through this interrogation too when I first started blogging.

How to choose a profitable niche for a blog?

This question can be answered through five topics:

  1. Passion
  2. Trending
  3. Competition
  4. Money niche?
  5. Affiliate programs

And this is what I will cover in this article. In the end, you should be able to choose a niche for your new blog. So, without any further due, let’s dive in!

*If you have any questions or comments, feel free to leave them down below, and I’ll make sure to answer you inside 24hrs. πŸ™‚

Find Your Passion

New Blogger (good choice :D)

If you are starting as a blogger, probably one of the essential points is to find a niche that you are passionate about. It will be easier to add content and to recommend products to your audience.

If you expect to build a business with your blog, it’d be better if you choose a niche that you see yourself writing more than 50 posts. If, after ten posts, you don’t know anymore what to write about, you’ll find it harder, and you’ll feel discouraged.

I think you get what I mean, but let me give you an example. Do you remember your younger days at school when a subject really interested you? Can you tell me if you found it easier to learn? I’ll talk for myself, but when something really interested me, I found it easy to learn, and I had fun doing it. It is about the same thing with blogging.

Blogging is not complicated (definitely not!), but it is something that takes time. So, to start as a blogger, if you don’t choose something that you particularly love, you’ll find it harder to take the time to work on it.

Old Blogger ( πŸ˜‰ )

On the other side, if you’ve been blogging for a couple of years now and you know how it works, you can take advantage of this knowledge and not necessarily choose a niche that you are passionate about.

What I mean by that is since you learned all the tips and tricks of blogging, you can go with a niche more specific and choose it depending on its profitability. You’ll be able to add useful and relevant content because you know how it works. To reach the same level as your first blog, it will take you less time and effort because you’ll know where to go.

Still, I encourage you to choose a niche that you particularly love because it definitely helps to build a business around it. It becomes more like a hobby than a “job.” Also, in the long term, you’ll probably be still motivated to work on this blog niche since it is something that you are passionate about.

To choose your niche, you can ask yourself these questions:

  • What are your hobbies?
  • Is there something you’re especially good at you’d like to share with others?
  • Do you see yourself in 2, 3 or even 5 years still blogging about this niche?

Now, some other factors must be taken into consideration, and this is what I want to look with you!

One of the things you should take into consideration is the trending of your chosen niche.

For sure, there are some niche that even if the trending is not “good” at the moment, it’s the type of niche that stays active whatever the time. As an example, international sports like hockey are niches that the trend will vary through time, but there will always be an interesting market for it. What will vary is the time of the year that will be more favourable for sales (for the hockey niche, it would be during winter, for example).

So, to do the exercise with you, I’ll take an arbitrary niche, which will be Gecko lizard, and I’ll do all the steps with you. At the end of this post, we’ll be able to tell if this niche would be profitable or not.

Why did I choose Gecko lizard as an example? Because I had a lizard for two years, but unfortunately, he died a couple of weeks ago because he was sick. Before he left me, I was thinking of building a blogging website about Gecko lizard, but I didn’t do the exercise I’ll do with you, so let’s do it now! I’ll see if I adopt another lizard. ^.^

The first step to do is: check on Google Trends

When you arrive on the Google Trends page, you have to enter your niche.

Gecko - How to Choose a Profitable Niche For a Blog

After hitting the search button or ENTER, you’ll arrive on this page:

Gecko - How to Choose a Profitable Niche For a Blog

Now, you can choose what you want to see on this page. For example, in the screenshot above, we see the results for the United States for the past 12 months. You can change this information for the country and the past time that you want. In my opinion, I highly suggest you to always check the results for the USA because it is probably the country where you could make the most sales. However, I encourage you also to check the results for your country.

What do these results show us? In fact, the graph is shown at the rate of 100, so the more it is close to 100, the better it is in trending. For our example, we can see that the trending for the past year in the USA is great, going between 70 and 100. It is not perfect, but it is not bad.

Since I’m from Canada, I will also check for this country, but I’ll keep the 12 past months.

Gecko - How to Choose a Profitable Niche For a Blog

As we can see, the trending is not as good as in the US, going between 46 and 70. That means that in Canada, Gecko is not a subject that is very looked for. Still, it has a good trending in the US, where most of the sales come from.

After you checked on Google Trends (it’s as simple as that!), you can go to the next step!

Search The Market For Competition

Now, it’s essential to see if there is a lot of competition in the niche you choose. The competition will guide you to tell if it can be long before your website earns some authority. In a niche where there are many established websites, it can be harder for a new website to rank on page 1. As always, it is possible, though!

Some niches are easy to determine if the competition is strong, take, for example, the health niche. Right now, this niche is competitive, and it can be hard for a new website to come in, BUT it is possible (if it was the niche you had in mind, go for it, it will maybe just take some more time).

Let’s check how I do to determine the competition. We’ll check out with our niche about Gecko lizard. To do so, I go on Google and search for keywords related to my niche. Let’s start with the simple word “gecko” and see what comes out.

Competition - How to Choose a Profitable Niche For a Blog

Okay, so the first results give me information about geckos, and that’s logical because I didn’t ask for anything specific, so naturally, Google gives me the information about the word I’m looking for. Now, let’s scroll down a bit more and see what we have:

Competition - How to Choose a Profitable Niche For a Blog

Some websites seem to give information about geckos, but I don’t see websites that are specific to geckos. I mean, their niche is more about animals in general than about geckos. This gives us a good idea of the competition for the simple word “gecko.” There isn’t an authority website talking only about geckos.

Now, what you can do is continue to search for keywords related to the gecko niche. These related keywords could bring you to smaller websites where their niche is specifically about geckos. Since they are not showing up on page 1 with the query of “gecko,” I think it gives us a chance to build an influential website about geckos.

Look For Selling Products And Profitable Affiliate Programs

The next step is about profitability. It wouldn’t be so exciting to start a blog with a niche where you cannot make a lot of money. I know money isn’t the only reason why you want to start a blog, but let’s say it has its part.

What you want to know is: what can you promote/sell related to your niche that your audience will want to buy? Since we are in the gecko niche, we should not try to sell to our visitors cooking products! I think you understand what I mean.

When we are taking this first look through the various products we can suggest to our audience, we won’t look at everything because it would be too long and anyway, we’ll probably find many other products while we build our blog. The point is, if we cannot find anything now, it might be harder to start something with this niche.

You can look for absolutely anything related to your niche, which means products, accessories, courses, services, etc. I’m going to look at this with you with our testing niche, the gecko.

So the first step is to look if there is a possibility to sell products, and after, we have to check if there are profitable affiliate programs we can join to sell these products.

Let’s say we are going to look for geckos’ accessories on Google.

Accessories - How to Choose a Profitable Niche For a Blog

When we check the keyword “gecko accessories” on Google, many articles come up. There are Amazon’s products, Walmart’s, PetSmart’s, etc. We can expect there are many of them, but just to have a confirmation, let’s check the Amazon’s ones.

Accessories - How to Choose a Profitable Niche For a Blog

Okay, so there are many of them, about seven pages, but the negative part is that they’re not expensive products. This is only a screenshot of a part of a page, but the prices go on average between 5$ and 50$, which is not a lot. For sure, some products are more expensive, maybe around 176$, but it’s not the majority.

So, this product category on Amazon (since Amazon has an affiliate program) could be a possibility for our blog. Still, we should have other products from other affiliate programs because Amazon has a commission rate of approximately 6%. 6% on 10$ is about 0,60$, so we will have to sell many of this product so that it becomes profitable.

It is mostly how the gymnastic goes to find products and affiliate programs related to your niche. I can assure you that there are probably many other affiliate programs in this niche that we could subscribe to; we just have to take the time to look for them.

The possibilities when building a blog are vast because the web is limitless. The only limits are to stay relevant to your niche and what you want to offer to your audience. If you respect that, even if you promote non-expensive products, your visitors will be happy, and you could make a lot of money.

So, if you chose your niche, you can do this exercise for a couple of product categories and then lookup for affiliate programs you could join. If you found a couple of them with various products, services, courses, etc. then it might be a profitable niche! The rest will depend on you and how you present your website content to your visitors!

You’re All Set Up!

We chose our niche, something that we (I am) passionate about: Gecko lizard.

We checked on Google Trends if it was a niche with some popularity for the last year: between 70 and 100 in the US, that’s good.

We searched for the market to have a better idea of our competition: conclusion, no authority website and a lot of space for our website in the gecko niche.

We confirmed we could make money out of this niche through the promotion of products, services, courses, etc.: there seem to be many possibilities, so we’ll have to search for more interesting affiliate programs.

We’re all set up to start our blog!

Now, it’s your turn to do the same steps but for YOUR blog niche.

Take the time to look for this information, and with all your answers found, you’ll be able to decide what niche is good for you. I’m sure you’ll find something A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.

  2. Audrey, I’ve read your very informative article and love it. I really like that you walked through using googletrends and google to check out a potential niche and how well it might do. I totally agree also with the training program that Wealthy Affiliate offers. It is definitely one of the best, if not THE BEST online affiliate training and hosting program. 1. Hi Shirley, Google Trends and Google alone are good indicators to know if your niche can potentially be good or not. It is not precise but it gives a good guideline. I’m happy to read that you also are part of Wealthy affiliate, it is an awesome training platform for anyone who wants to build their own business through blogging!

  3. This is fantastic advice for new bloggers! I truly wish I could have read this before I picked my niches, and I have three. I only really like two of them, and only one is remotely profitable.
I’m tempted now to write articles about products for geckos. πŸ˜€

  4. Thank you for this awesome tips Audrey. I struggled with finding my niche when I was starting and then decided to go with MMO niche, because I failed so many times with different products and I was not ready to let anyone else get scammed or go through what I have gone through.

I think the key is to be pationate about what you are writing because this will ensure you never quit and have fun while doing it.

    1. Hi Strahinja, for sure if you don’t know what niche to choose, the MMO one can be an option. Although, it is a competitive niche and it can be hard for a beginner to start with this niche. However, nothing is impossible and absolutely everyone can do it! Like you said, the key is to be passionate and love what we do, it definitely does the difference.

  5. Perfect step-by-step tutorial for finding a blogging niche! I’m sorry to hear your gecko died. I used to know someone who had a pet lizard and he had a Facebook page with over 300’000 fans (yep 300k)! All he did was post photos of his lizard and other related lizard news or products. It’s crazy how many profitable niches are out there, with little competition… For sure lizards wasn’t on my radar and it almost feels like a “secret” niche. I know there are countless more niches like this, and I think your guide here is a great help to identify them!

    1. Hi James, don’t worry about my gecko, I’m sure he’s fine where he is. πŸ™‚ Wow, amazing! 300k fans on a gecko? I should have thought of this niche earlier! Definitely, there are many of them hiding somewhere on the web, we just have to look for them and find them. It is not always easy, but we can surely handle this. Glad you liked my guide πŸ™‚
